Our aim is zero harm

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Have you ever wondered how we compare to the outside world when it comes to how many injuries we have had?.  How many days are lost because of injury?. Or our best effort when it comes to how many days between lost time accidents?. Well, wonder no more. Each site is soon to have on display, somewhere near the main entrance, a display scoreboard, which will show our statistics for all of the above items. The scoreboards will show how many injuries we have had in the current year (and previous year), how many days lost in the current year (and previous year) and how many days since our last lost time accident (and our previous best on the site). The scoreboards are a quick way for you to tune into how well our safety efforts are working on your site, however there are a few objectives we expect from you all:

• If you see a hazard, report it so it can be fixed

• If you see one of your workmates about to do something that looks unsafe, speak up (he or she might do the same for you one day)

• Find out about the basic safety rules on your site and PLEASE stick to them

– for everyone’s sake.

The first scoreboard is already up and running at our Devonport Logistics site

– watch out for a scoreboard coming soon to your site.

Remember, our aim is ZERO HARM.

SeaRoad hosts students

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

SeaRoad played host to Tasmanian students from around the state as part of the Careers on the Move Induction Program on the 9th May. The program was designed by the Australian Apprenticeship System and is supported by local transport businesses and is in its first year of implementation. Organised by Jamie Auton and Lisa Fulton, 20 students descended onto the Logistics Devonport depot eager to learn all about SeaRoad and its operations. A tour was conducted with the group being split into 3 small groups. Group one was held in the board room and gave the students an overview of the administration process. Leonie Brooks demonstrated how to manifest cargo in the Road Runner system and a group organisational chart was also shown to explain the structure of SeaRoad.

Group two were given a demonstration of a truck check from Robert Smith transport trainer from Transtrain. A competition was also held for the student who could correctly complete a truck pre-start checklist, with a prize awarded to the winner.  Group three were taken to the workshop with Jeremy Benson for a tour of the quarantine wash bay, logistics shed and shipping yard. Jeremy and Jamie both shared their own personal experiences with the company, explaining that progression within SeaRoad is achievable. Jamie explained how his career had commenced as a truck driver and how he was now Compliance Supervisor.

As host, SeaRoad will also have a student placed at each of the Logistics Tasmanian branches in June. To be eligible for this placement students had to apply and go through a rigorous selection process. Each student will spend 3 days at each branch and have a hands on experience which will be invaluable to them as they map out their career path in the transport and logistics industry.

Conducted by our agent QBE Insurance all participants are now armed with the skills and knowledge to help manage and support return to work outcomes for injured workers.

Their role is to help the injured workers stay at work or get back to work safely and sustainably, and where possible, in their pre-injury duties. They are also the key person for getting everyone in the workplace involved in the return to work process.

A further training course on Workers Compensation was conducted by Work Options (Injury Management Specialists) in March and May to compliment the return to work training and also to provide fellow supervisors with an insight of the workers compensation process, legislation and promoting a positive workplace culture. Doreen Linehan, National Services Manager from Work Options conducted the training and received positive feedback from both sessions. Doreen said “It was great to see a cross section of staff involved in the training and this will work well to support injured employees back to work in a safe and efficient manner. This will also support best practice, in which the best place for an injured worker to rehabilitate is in the workplace”.
